What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays and onlays are restorations (fillings) which consist of a solid substance fitted to a tooth to repair damaged teeth. Each is formed using a mold of the damaged tooth and then bonded to your tooth.  Inlays fill the grooves of a tooth (similar to a composite filling). Onlays cover a larger surface of the tooth.

Inlays & Onlays in Orangeville

What are inlays and onlays used for?

Our team uses inlays and onlays to repair chipped, misshapen, broken, uneven or damaged teeth. They are matched to your natural enamel and your original tooth shape. Inlay and onlays are custom designed in-office at the lab.

What will my inlay or onlay appointment be like?

  • You will need two appointments to complete the procedure.
  • At your first appointment, the tooth is prepared for the inlay or onlay.
  • If necessary, your dentist will remove the decayed section of the tooth, then create a mold of the tooth.
  • Using that mold, the custom restoration is created. A temporary filling is placed on the tooth until the restoration is ready.
  • At your second appointment, the dentist will bond the restoration to your tooth.
