The primary teeth or "baby teeth" are very important to your child's future dental health. They help guide the permanent teeth into their final position.
Let's assume for an instance that your child looses a primary first molar by the age of six. Without this tooth, the permanent six-year-old molar begins to move forward, and this prevents both permanent bicuspids from erupting into the proper position.
It is important to stop problems before they develop. However, when decay, or bite problems are an issue, a filling or a stainless steel crown can be placed throughout a child's young life as teeth are exfoliating and erupting. It is important that periodic x-rays are performed to see beneath the surface to detect small problems before they become major ones. Prevention is the key and it is important to deal with any dental problems early so that it can be treated with very little discomfort.
